ABOUT MECA

Our Mission: To secure the freedom and the right of same-sex couples to enter into legally-recognized civil marriage, having all the federal and state benefits and responsibilities which that entails.

Liberty Statue by Janine PerryMarriage Equality California, Inc., (MECA) is an official chapter of Marriage Equality USA (MEUSA). We are incorporated in the State of California as a not-for-profit corporation. and we are a qualified tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Service Code. Contributions to MECA are tax-deductible for Federal Income Tax purposes. Our website can be accessed as either .org or .com.

We are a nonpartisan, grassroots organization with the sole purpose of bringing about an end to marriage discrimination towards gay and lesbian couples. We will do this by educating the public through:

  • rallies & demonstrations
  • educational programs
  • outreach
  • media representation
  • strong membership base
  • gathering endorsements from individuals and organizations
  • working with other organizations in collaborative efforts
  • training others to educate the public on why marriage matters
  • building alliance partnerships with non-gay groups who support equality
We will open the eyes of those with open hearts and end marriage discrimination in this great state.

We believe that a civil-marriage contract can protect both opposite-sex and same-sex couples. The over 1,000 federal and state rights and benefits provided in a civil marriage contract must be available to everyone. The 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution grants every citizen equal protection under the law. We will not debate that fact .

Ending marriage discrimination is a monumental task. Polls say 80% of Californians do not believe the government should discriminate against gays and lesbians Polls also say only 40% of Californians support same-sex marriage. That leaves us with 40% of the population to reach and educate. Large numbers of people just don't get it yet...but they will.

We believe that by launching a major grassroots movement to educate the public, we will succeed in opening peoples' minds and changing public opinion. MECA will do this by:

  • educating members so that they can educate others
  • speaking to EVERY college in the state
  • educating the media through rallies and demonstrations
  • reaching out to make sure lawmakers are aware of the magnitude of marriage discrimination

To sum it up, we have a very simple agenda -------

CHANGE THE WORLD!

MECA is a nonpartisan group that welcomes all who are just and fair. We support anyone who supports marriage equality; we welcome anyone who believes marriage discrimination has to end. Our board is made up of activists from all walks of life. Board members come from many parts of the state, with different backgrounds, and different sexual orientations.
